Thanksgiving Art Journal Page with Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts

Happy Thanksgiving and many blessings to all.  In the US, we celebrate Thanksgiving, so since today is Thanksgiving for us, I wanted to use my art journal to commemorate all that I am thankful for.  I will be using some Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts chipboard to help me out.  I love using chipboard in my art journals because it adds some dimension and not too much bulk.  Also, when I find just the right shapes, it seems to get that ole' mojo started again.

I have prepared a video tutorial for you in the hopes you will enjoy watching the process.

Snowman Mini Album

Hi everyone!  Welcome back to my first blog post of the New Year.  I was thinking about all the Christmas and New Year's celebrations and get togethers, and the opportunity for photos to capture those special moments.  Now, you are going to need a place to display them, and what better place than a specially made Snowman mini album.(coming soon to the store)  This is a new one from Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts, and I am tickled to share my ideas with you.

Front Cover
Back Cover
There are six chipboard pages, and I traced each side onto print paper and cut them out.  Remember, the front and back of each paper will need to be mirrored to fit each side of the chipboard  properly.

Apply adhesive to the back side of each paper piece.  I like to use my Xyron Creative Station for speed and efficiency, but you can use any adhesive you have on hand.

Adhere papers to each chipboard page, front and back.  Trim off any excess paper, if necessary.

Punch holes in binding edge of each chipboard page.  I used a Cinch tool, but if you don't have one of these, you can punch two or three holes in each page and using binder rings to hold the book together.

Edge each page with white acrylic paint.  I used Adirondack Snow Cap in a dabber bottle for quick application.

Use the chipboard pieces from the Winter Snowman Banner to trace each shape onto various pieces of the paper.  I decided to glue a snowman to each page inside my album, so I cut 12 pieces of each shape, remembering to mirror them so they would fit properly.

With the exception of 10 of the snowman body, I ran all these paper pieces through my Xyron Creative Station.  I edged the chipboard pieces with the white acrylic paint.

These pieces are not symmetrical, so I figured out which way to lay them on top of each other.  I  marked them with a directional arrow to indicate which way to place the chipboard snowman on top of the album page.  The top hat has a direction, too, as does the scarf.  You will know right away that it is not quite right if you place it down wrong.  Then I adhered the paper pieces to the chipboard pieces.

I used gem stickers in various sizes for the eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons.  I used German Dresden scrap pieces from my stash, one for his hat band and another to center over the scarf.  Lastly, I used a waterbrush and Blue Ice watercolor to add shading and delineate his arms down to the mittens.

I also painted the tiny German scrap pieces with the Blue Ice watercolor to tone down the shiny gold color before adhering them.

I decided to turn each of my snowmen into a pocket on the remaining interior pages.  Just run a line of white glue along  the outer edge to attach him to the page.  I worked in assembly line fashion, where I continued to do the same step for each page.  This allows the glue to dry while I'm working ahead.  By the time I get back to the first page, the glue is usually dry.

Now you will have room for tags, more photos, ephemera, or any items you want to slip into the pocket, and still have room for photos on each page background.  Then come back and decorate each snowman with his clothes and facial features, just the same as for the cover snowman.

Paint snowflakes and word ribbons with white paint, let dry.  Brush a coat of gloss varnish over the word ribbons only.

Add a coat of white crackle paste over the larger, more solid snowflake and let dry.

Paint the snowflakes with a wash of Cerulean Blue acrylic paint.  If you want a darker color, just add another coat after the first coat dries.

Paint a darker wash of the Cerulean Blue paint over the word ribbons, as shown.

For added shimmer, add Vintage Silk Opal Magic wax to the word ribbons and snowflakes.  You can see how it add highlights to the word ribbons.

Make three rosettes following the directions with the rosettes dies.  Adhere them to the front cover of the mini album, as shown in the finished photo at the top of the post.  Adhere the word ribbons above the rosettes, and glue a couple of the snowflakes over the rosettes.  Additional bling was added to the snowflake centers, too.

I cut tags from coordinating solid color card stock and added matching stickers from the paper collection.  These were slipped into the snowman pocket.  More photos or journaling can be added to the back of each tag.

Below are pictures of each page of the album.

Upcycled Vanity Box

Hi everyone!  Barbara here today on the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts blog with a fun and easy upcycle project.

I saved this box that once contained a tall coffee cup because it seemed nice and sturdy.

I have a pretty wire shelf on my vanity in my bathroom, where I keep ugly pill bottles and other commercial products with not-very-pretty labels.  So I started storing them in this box, which is the exact size I needed for my shelf.  I've been wanting to decorate it to fit my bathroom colors, and found this beautiful paper from Prima's French Riviera paper collection.  So, I covered the outside of the box first, wrapping the pretty paper over the top edge.

Next, I found this solid paper I've had in my stash that I purchased years ago from Target.  The color was a perfect match, so I cut it to size to fit the inside.  (Measurements were not given as it will depend on the size box you have on hand.)  Now it is completely covered and ready for the embellishing.

But, at this time, it is a good idea to brush on a matte varnish over the papers.  I used DecoArt Ultra Matte Varnish.  This will protect them from anything wet that may get dropped or splashed on your box.  You can also use a glossy varnish for a different look.  This is, of course, optional, depending on whether or not you plan on putting it in a more wet environment.

Make yourself a template from a piece of scrap paper.  Cut it to the same size as the shorter side of the box, fold the paper in half to mark center.  Use a ruler to measure 1" down from the top  of the paper, center the handle at the fold, and align top of handle with the edge of the ruler.  Mark holes with a pencil.

Align the template with the top of the box and centered.  Use an awl to punch the holes, where needed.

Do this for both sides and attach handles with the brads.

Since I attached the handles after covering the box with paper, the brad prongs show inside.  If you don't like that, you can punch small circles of the same paper and glue over the prongs.

Choose one of the Stackable Labels and use the top piece to fit a computer-generated "Articles de toilette" onto a scrap of the solid paper.  I looked it up and that is French for "toiletries".  I thought it sounded better.

Cut the paper out and adhere to the top piece.  I  like to use an emery board to neaten the paper edges.

Paint the bottom part of the label with Lilac chalk paint.  Next, dry brush the  Rustic chalk paint over the edges, as shown.  If you put too much of the Rustic paint on, dry brush  another coat using the Lilac paint again.

I chose two of the birds from the Bird on Branch Assortment to fit on either side of the label.  First,  paint the birds with the DecoArt Vintage chalk paint, the branches with the Rustic chalk paint, and the leaves with Spanish Moss chalk paint.  I used the Inktense pencils to add details to the bird and leaves.

Adhere the label and bird pieces to one of the longer sides of the box, as shown.

For the opposite side, I chose to use the Flower Leaves Flourish.  I used a ruler to center the piece, but you could also just eyeball it.

I also used a couple pieces of washi  tape to hold it in place while I traced inside each opening with a pencil.

Remove chipboard and paint traced areas with a coat of white gesso or white paint.  Let dry.

Paint over the gesso, painting the leaves with Spanish Moss, the flower petals with Lilac, and the flower center with Vintage Mustard chalk paints.  You should have something that looks like this.

And now is a good time to check your work.  Lay the chipboard piece over the painted areas and see if you have full coverage inside the openings.  If not, fill them in with the appropriate color now.  You can see I have a few spots that need a slight touchup.

Paint the flower with the Twinks Terracotta Rose, the leaves with Golden Jade, and the flower center with Sunflower.  Let dry.

Once you get the areas painted to your satisfaction. paint the chipboard with DecoArt Timeless chalk paint.

Dab ColourArte Solar Gold over the chipboard and dry with heat tool, or let it dry naturally.

Now add glue to the back and adhere chipboard over painted flowers and leaves.  Be sure to add the glue to the correct side, otherwise it will not match up with the painted design because it is not symmetrical.
