Victorian Style Steamer Trunk

Hi everyone!  Barbara here today on the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts blog, and I have the cutest piece to share with you today.  It is the 8" Steamer Trunk, and just think of all the possible uses for this sweet piece.  I was thinking it could be used on your desk for small office supplies, or a jewelry box to keep some of your precious "jewels".  How about using it on your craft desk to keep some of your small embellishments, buttons, ink refills, glue sticks, etc.  Just change up the paper design to suit your style.

Rise and Shine or Have a Little Wine Cards

Hi chippie fans!  Barbara here with a couple of easy to make cards for you.  I think you will get a kick out of these.  I am an avid coffee drinker, and I like a glass of wine now and then.  So, these shape sets from Gina's Designs Lasercuts were right up my alley! Understanding that I am not the only one who appreciates a good cup of coffee or a fine glass of wine,  I knew they would make great cards.

Card 1 is obviously for the wine lovers.   I used Derwent Inktense blocks with a water brush to color the chipboard pieces from the Wine Shape Set.  However, the cork screw tip was colored with a silver marker, and the chipboard cork shape was covered with a scrap of cork paper on which I stamped "WINE" with black archival ink.  The card stock doily was added as a backdrop for the wine bottle and glasses, which I covered with a light coat of 3D Crystal Lacquer.  I die cut a vintage tag from a print paper, edged with Dusty Concord distress ink, stamped the sentiment with black archival ink, and adhered to the card.

As for card 2, I covered the coffee cup with print paper and added a scrap of corrugated kraft card as a coffee cup sleeve.  The spoon was inked with Versamark ink and heat embossed with silver embossing powder. I used white Inktense Blocks with a water brush to color the steam swirl.  I stamped "Rise and Shine" onto a flower print from the paper, colored "SHINE" with a white gel pen, cut it out and adhered to the card with foam dots.

Birds of a Feather Birdhouse

Hi chippie fans!  Barbara here with another birdhouse project for you.  If you haven't guessed by now, I love birds, and this Birdhouse Mini Display Tray from Gina's Designs Lasercuts started my creative juices flowing.  

Trim chicken wire to fit over one of the birdhouse frames.  Paint chicken wire with Sterling paint, then dab Rusty paint randomly for a weathered look.   Adhere to one of the black painted birdhouse frames.

Measure and mark chickenwire for size

Paint the two frame (open) pieces with black chalk paint.


Select a print clock face, adhere to the remaining frame (open) and trim excess.  Insert a set of tiny clock hands with a tiny brad.  

Select a portion of the print paper, using the open frame piece as a template to see which portion of the paper you want to show through. 

Cut out the paper just inside the pencil marks and adhere to the base (solid piece) of the birdhouse.  Paint the back and sides with black chalk paint just to finish it off nicely.  Color background paper with Rusty Hinge, Stormy Sky, and Peeled Paint distress inks.  Set aside.

These are the three pieces you should have now, and will be adhered together in this order later.

Use a spatula to spread a thick coat of the white crackle paste over the frame with the clock face.  (TIP:  You might want to do this before adding the clock face and hands).

Dab Gathered Twigs and Vintage Photo distress stains over crackled frame to bring out the cracks and to give depth with the different brown colors.  Then dry brush some of the Turquoise paint over the crackles.

Here is a closeup of the color variations from this technique.

 Adhere first frame piece with the chickenwire attached to the solid print covered background piece.

Adhere second frame piece with the clock face over the piece with the chicken wire, sandwiching the chickenwire between the two frames.

Color both the lace border sticks and one corner from the Art Deco Border & Corners Set with Prima Color Bloom spray mists in Soft Teal, Gilded, Cobalt, and Emerald.  Rub Rose Quartz Treasure Gold over the top.  Deepen the color for a better color match by sponging on Peeled Paint distress ink.

Adhere these three pieces to the top of the birdhouse, as shown.

Paint Birds of a Feather with Rusty paint (words), and Turquoise paint on birds and feather.  Add Rose Quartz Treasure Gold, more Turquoise to each section.  Adhere to the bottom section of the birdhouse, as shown.

I thought something was missing, so I used this tiny butterfly from the butterflies and dragonflies shape set, covered with the Rose Quartz Treasure Gold on both sides.  On the front side, I added a bit of blue color with the Prima Cobalt mist, but I used a paintbrush to add it to the wings.  I gently lifted the wings and adhered to the clock, as shown.

My Steampunk Muse

Hello everyone!  Barbara here. I am really excited about my project today.  Okay, I know I am easily entertained, but when it comes to steampunk, I really am, easily entertained, that is!  I could not wait to work on Gina's Steampunk Cage Dressform.  And here she is!!!

Directions:



I painted the cage portion (front and back) with the Iron paint from the VerDay kit and let dry for one hour.  Then, following directions with the kit, I painted a second coat of the Iron paint and sprayed with the Patina Solution while the paint was still wet.  You will probably need to work in sections if your paint is drying quickly.  Here are the rusted pieces after the Patina Solution was allowed to sit for 24 hours and do it's thing.

Use the same process to paint the dressform pieces, but use the copper paint instead of the iron paint.  The Patina Solution gives a bluish green patina to the copper. 

I used Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue to put my dress form and cage together.  I have found it to be the easiest glue to use, and it really does "grab" the chipboard nicely.

• Very Important Tip:  I discovered that my chipboard had swelled from the Patina Solution and I was not able to slip the chipboard strips through the holes in the base and top.  What I ended up doing was using a craft knife to trim the little extender pieces so I could push them into the holes.  So, you may prefer putting the cage portion together before painting and adding the patina solution.

I wanted all of my remaining chipboard pieces to also have a metal look, so I heat embossed the floral border and scrap pieces of the Chainlink with Silvery Shimmer ink and silver embossing powder.  I wanted the chain link to look weathered, so I used a Versamark pen randomly, mostly where the links join, and heat embossed with Black Soot distress embossing powder.

The floral border and some metal embellishments were adhered to the top of the cage, as shown.

The bird cage was inked with Golden Glitz ink and gold embossing powder.  Metal gears, bird, and resin flower added to cage, as shown.  I added a small piece of jewelry chain to hang the bird cage.  The chain link was adhered to the cage posts.

Some metal clock hands were adhered to each post, as shown.  Square metal jewelry pieces and tiny metal beads were adhered to each gear "tooth".  

I glued some tiny watch parts to the body of the  dress form and found these tiny metal bird beads in my stash, adhering one to the shoulder and two to the top of the cage.

Card Making with Garden Fairies

Hello all you chipboard fans out there!  Barbara here with more fun projects to share, and since the weekend is almost here, I hope you are ready for some card making with Gina's Designs Lasercuts!  I have a couple of cards I made with the Garden Fairies Small Shape Set, and they are so perfect for card making.  Sized just right, they will make the perfect card for the fairy lovers out there.  So, let's get started.

For my first card, Fairy Whispers...

 I made a 5"x7" card base, trimmed the "Fairy Whispers" paper slightly smaller, edged with white paint for a shabby look, then layered onto card front.  These are the pieces I used.

I inked the large rectangular filigree frame with white acrylic paint and added a glitter embossing powder while the paint was still wet.  Then I heat embossed it and gave it a second coat to make it more white and glittery.  The center part of the frame was simply covered with another piece of the paper (see photo above).

I cut one of the fern fronds apart and used those four bottom leaves to add to my bouquet.  I cut those four apart and colored with green crayons, blending with a bit of water.

I colored the tiny fairy with pink crayons, and her wings with ochre and green color crayons to match the colors in the paper.  I used foam dots to lift her off the page, and Eucalyptus Stickles was applied to her wings, also.

The lace border was colored with a gray and ochre crayon, blended together with water, and Platinum Stickles applied over it.

After adding all these parts, I made a small bouquet with paper flowers, the leaves, a butterfly and some swirly gemstones to finish it off.

Now for my second card, Garden Fairy ...

 I made a 6"x6" card base from peach card stock.  I trimmed another piece of paper slightly smaller, edged it with Seedless Preserves distress ink, and adhered to the card front.  I also added the ruler print along the top edge.  These are the pieces used for this card.

The square filigree frame was first covered with Orchid pigment ink and heat embossed with Blushing Pink Pastel embossing powder.  A second coat was applied to give it that enameled look.  Again, I covered these square frame insert with a piece of the paper.

The fairy was inked with Antique Gold pigment ink and heat embossed with Champagne Pearlustre embossing powder.  I used foam dots to lift her off the page.

In a similar fashion, I covered two fern fronds with Fresh Green pigment ink and heat embossed with Emerald Green embossing powder.

Each piece was adhered to the card, as shown, adding a butterfly and paper flowers to make a small bouquet.  Platinum Stickles was added to the butterfly, the fairy, and the flower tips.
