"Steampunk-in" Altered Craft Pumpkin by Lynne

Hey there! While I'm not a huge Halloween fan (other than the cutesy little-kid type stuff) I do enjoy fall decor and I saw an altered craft pumpkin on a crafty friend's Facebook page which inspired my to create this one. I started with one of those craft pumpkins you can find at Michael's although this technique could be used on real pumpkins as well.

I used DecoArt Honest Copper metallic acrylic paint to coat the entire pumpkin. The colour looks richer and less orange in real life, but we were having a dreary overcast day.

I arranged a combination of chipboard pieces, flowers, and metal embellishments and then painted them with the copper paint as well. Then I set them aside to dry.

I used Mod Podge to attach pieces of lace here and there on the front of the pumpkin. I found the thinner synthetic lace worked better than the thicker cotton lace. I then added another coat of paint. If you try to attach the lace before the first coat of paint it may not cover well in the openings so the extra step is worthwhile.

Then I was able to have some fun with the background sponge painting over the copper with gold and adding some mist in warm tones.

After attaching the chipboard and other embellishments, I continued to add mists making sure to use some of them heavily enough to encourage dripping into the grooves of the pumpkin. I also rubbed Brown and Paprika Versacolor inks onto the embellishments to define them a little more. The final sprays were Dylusions Pomengranate Seed which has a rich burgundy and a dash of Heidi Swapp Gold Lame.

This really was a fun project to put together and I think a cluster of these altered pumpkins in different sizes (and maybe even some gourd shapes) would make an eye catching display. Happy fall to you and have a colourful week!

Hi everyone, it's Teresa here today on this amazing Sunday to share a quick project that you can make to store lots of crafty pens and such or maybe even paint brushes and other little things that you need to get organized.  I used the Brush Caddy to start my project and then went to my stash to find some pretty things to paint and decorate it.  Join me for a quick tutorial on how to make this one!

So to make this project you will need the following:

Scotch Quick Dry Adhesive

Maja Design Papers- Vintage Frost and Autumn Basics

Americana Decor Chalky vintage paint

chalk inks-Agean blue, Gingerbread, white

Prima Flowers

Spellbinders Border Die

Hot glue Gun

Paper Trimmer, scissors, paintbrush, ribbon, cheesecloth, glitter spray

1. First step is to assemble and glue together your Brush Caddy.  Let it dry.

2. Paint 1 to 2 coats of chalky finish paint over the entire project.   Let dry.

3. Measure and cut pieces of decorative paper to cover the four sides of the caddy.  I kept mine simple with strips and then cut/embossed a pretty Spellbinders die with a heart motif for the front and back. Chalk all the edges of the papers and glue onto the Brush caddy.  Let dry.

4. Decorate the front by creating a pretty bow with wired ribbon, cheesecloth and some pretty flowers.  Glue to the front of the box with a Hot glue gun.

5.  Finish by inking the painted edges of the box and spraying it with a glitter mist to make it more sparkly.  And now you have the perfect caddy to hold all those hard to store things you need.  It's quick and easy and you can do it in just an afternoon.  And it would be great for a gift too!!

Pumpkin House

Hello to all you amazing crafter's out there. Shanna here with a new little Halloween creation to share with you. I played with a new Mini House Shadowbox.  

Step one - Gather up all your goodies your want to alter and give them a coat of gesso. I went with black on everything and then white for the pumpkin.

I used some orange acrylic paint for a base on the pumpkin.

While waiting for this to dry, I sprayed some lace with some pumpkin colors and let that dry. 

Next I glued the lace down on the pumpkin. 

I painted the rest of the pieces I had with more acrylic paint. 

Then added some leftover chunks of scraps I had on my desk to build up dimension. 

I put everything together and then realized it needed to have some sort of feet on it. I also used a Tim Holtz rub on that says October 31.

A "Wicked" Canvas

Hello, everyone! Mary here with a canvas I call "Wicked." Halloween is not normally my thing, but I had a lot of fun making this.

The first thing I did was cover the entire canvas with black gesso. Next, I took different sheets of paper and tore them into small bits. After that, each edge of the small paper bits was inked with Gathered Twigs. The next step after attaching the paper to the canvas was to apply a thin coat of white gesso over the entire thing to tone down the brightness of the paper. The ink will turn the gesso a soft brown. Once the gesso was dry, I applied small strips of drywall joint tape to random spots. I then used two of the spiderwebs from the Spiderweb Shape Set as stencils. I applied embossing paste over the webs, various spots on the canvas, and on the joint paint. When the embossing paste was dry, I removed the joint tape and sprayed the canvas with Tears on my Pillow Tangerine and Summer Lovin' Sun. After that was dry, I used Gathered Twigs and Black Soot along all four edges of the canvas.

For the chipboard pieces I used, I first covered them all in white gesso. As I started working with each piece, I did recover each one in black gesso. I have listed below how I altered each piece!

Corner spiderwebs: Magic Moon Pearls embossing powder

 Bats: Black acrylic paint. The large bat is applied with foam pop squares.
Wicked: Glitter

 

Witches Hats: Black embossing powder and on one, splattered with gold paint marker. The belt on the hats -  orange acrylic paint and silver paint marker

Spiders: Glitter glue
Cauldron and witches feet: Gloss black,  silver, green and black paint, gold paint marker.
       Attached to the canvas with pop dots

Fall Tags by Deann

Good morning. For this project I made fall tags using the X-Large tags and the 3D Chipboard tree for the base of the tags. I covered the tags in fall paper, inked the edges with walnut stain Distress Ink and the smudged white paint on some of the edges. I only used one side of the tree. I cut the tree down the center, then painted both sections brown. Once dry, I rubbed the tree with gold paste. I attached one section to each of the tags. I used the Fall Shape Set  to finish the tags.

Halloween Heart

Yep, Halloween Heart. Because Halloween is my favorite-est favorite and I'm spreadin' the love! Lora here with a fun project using the Mini Display Tray-Heart.

I started out using the overlay tray (front piece) as a template for my orange paper, cutting carefully inside the pencil line, which is a much truer cut and fits the shape without too much trimming afterwards. I also cut out my background paper for the solid back piece. I glued both papers in place.

Once again, using the overlay tray as a template, I traced around the images I decided were suited to each section of the tray. In this case, I cut OUTSIDE of the lines so I would have a little extra paper space to glue onto the frame. I then used a scalpel (you can also use a craft knife) for some detailed fancy cutting on the images so that the background paper would show through.

The above photo shows me checking the layout before I glued things down. Next step was to glue each piece to the underside of the overlay tray. (Pictured below)

Once all the components were secure I gave it a few minutes to dry.....

And glued the overlay tray on top of the back piece, taking care to make sure all the edges lined up neatly. The hard part for me is waiting for the darn thing to dry. So I went into the kitchen and made some gingerbread cake. An hour later I flipped the piece over and painted the back black. I also chose one of the Stackable Labels from the Stackable Labels Shape Set and painted it black (back and front).

I covered the top layer of the label with the orange paper I used on the overlay, printed out 'We Love Halloween" and glued it on the bottom of the label. I wanted to attach the label to the heart with wire, so I lined up the label, centering at the top of the heart and carefully marked both pieces with a marker, indicating where I wanted the holes to be (two holes for each piece). You can see my tiny white dots on each piece, well at least you can on the label, referencing where to drill.

I used my little hand drill to make the four holes, made two jump rings out of my favorite hardware store wire, and attached the two pieces. I glued a little eye hook the the label, added a couple of details like a tiny witches hat,  a pair of glasses and the number 31. It's ready to display!

Steampunk Spells Mixed Media Canvas

Hello, Friends!  It's Kathy Clement here with you to share another Spooktacular Halloween tutorial using fabulous Steampunk Chips from Gypsy Soul.

This Steampunk Spells Mixed Media Canvas is made with some vintage book covers that I found in my stash.  It measures about  7" wide by 9" tall.  I've used texture paste and a stencil around the edges then built a fun steampunk inspired on top.

There are so many wonderful steampunk chips in the store, but I have had my eye on this fabulous Clockwork Penny Farthiing for a long time!

It's been treated with paint and embossing enamel to give it a really cool steampunk finish!
