Pretty Standing Flip Book

It crossed my mind to use this standing flip book to create something practical . I had thought of maybe a daily "to-do" list, or daily affirmations and meditations. That didn't happen. Instead I got down to some serious stash busting!

I dug deep into my paper hoard and used papers from my Graphic 45 days. I've used a mish-mash of older collections, I mostly used Botanical Tea and Time to Flourish.

I added a little sort of nest of flowers at the base... again busting the stash!

Assembly was SUPER simple. I only have two bits of advice... 

1. Be wary of adding a large design element at the top. It's so temping, but it may hinder the flipping of the pages.

2. When assembling the base leave the areas that slide together unembellished. This will help the pieces to fit together much more easily.

You know, I've always been more of a silver fox than a golden girl... but I had a bunch of dresden in my stash and I might be swayed to the other side.

Most of the butterflies I've used have been fussy cut from the G45 papers, but the ones below are stickers from... the dollar store! Aren't they pretty?!

The flip book comes with 6 chipboard pages so there is loads of room to play and experiment.

I was rather heavy handed with the dimention on the pages and there was still loads of wiggle room. You could easily add plenty of your own additional pages.

Standing Flip Book by Rhonda

As a mixed media artist, I naturally have many old photos, millinery flowers, buttons, and other treasures to use in my art. I hoard them and then a project comes along in which I just have to use some of my treasures. This was one of them.

I have so many wonderful old photographs, as I'm sure many of you do as well. But I've never really displayed them, except for propping up the occasional favorite. While doing Guest Design Team work for Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts, I knew from the get go that I wanted to use the Standing Flip Book that I received. Then I put two and two together and came up with a project that was so relaxed and great fun to create.

I bet you can already see where I'm going with this one. I find such pleasure in mixing up vintage lace and treasures to create art. I have several altered books I have made on my own and in swaps that use these same items. Why not a Standing Flip Book to display? Exactly! Too good of an idea to pass up. So I got busy. The stand comes with six pages laser cut from heavy duty graphics board. 

First I ran my pages through my Xyron adhesive runner. I love this baby when it comes to applying adhesive to larger surfaces. I chose several papers that blended nicely together including this Juliet Verona 12x12 sheet, this fabulous Tan Faux Leather Paper, Lotus Scrapbook Paper and more. 

A quick trim and file, (yes that is an emery board) and I'm off to the next side. 

OH OH OH, DON'T forget to re-punch your holes before covering the other side. 

Done covering and filing, next a bit of Antique Linen Distress Paint so that my edges blend in with the front and back of the page. 

Now it's time to play with my photos, which I want and where, as well as larger and smaller pieces of vintage lace. I love to layer it all and just add to the page as much as I like.

For this photo, I decided to make a frame using vintage lace, folded over and glued into place. Clothes pins are a MUST to give you extra fingers while glue dries. Just be sure to remove them before the glue dries all the way, other wise they too will be glued into place.

Above is the back and below is the front, just so you can see how the finished process looks during dry time. 

For this page I used a large piece of vintage lace that I was able to wrap all the way around the page, meeting the edges in the center of the back of the page. 

I added another piece of lace down the center to cover the seam.

After adding my photo, of course I once again used my clothes pins to hold it all in place for a bit.

I love the design of this mirror (Mirror 1). It reminds me of the frames you would find on old pictures. So I decided to alter it so I could frame one of my favorite old pics.

After cutting the "stand" off, I filed the cut edges smooth. Of course I saved the left over parts to use on another project. The detail is just too perfect. 

The frame looks gilded with the use of Distress Paints in Tarnished Brass.

The main thing is to just have fun with it, no stress, no time line, just use the things you love to make it your own. I made a huge mess in my studio with lace and buttons everywhere, but each page was given a life and I love the end result. 

I wanted the actual flip book to be somewhat manly, but in those natural tea stain colors I adore. I used several layers of this printed tissue and lots of watered down glue. While wet, the tissue easily peels apart so "trimming" was easy. After I put all of my layers on, I did a final, thicker coat of glue to "seal" the piece. 

So here is my finished flip book. I can change the "cover" page often, especially since I did both sides of the pages. 

I didn't feel right separating these two photos, so I put the child on one page and the (I'm assuming) mother on the next.

 

Vintage shoe clips always make a project gorgeous, if you don't hoard them and keep them all together, lol.

Standing Flip Book Calendar by Barbara Rankin

Hello everyone.  Barbara here today with a pretty cool flip album with stand from Gypsy Soul.  This kit comes with six chipboard pages, each with a different decorative bottom edge.  I decided to turn this into a calendar, beginning with August 2016, and carrying on through July 2017.  You can google calendars and find lots of different styles to print and cut apart for this project.  I found that the Graphic 45 paper, Time to Flourish, was a perfect complement for my flip calendar.  

This is the way the album will attach to the stand.  Simple!  I removed the rings and the chipboard pages and first glued the stand together.

Next, I painted the stand with a coat of white gesso, just to give it a good base for paints to adhere.

I wasn't sure where I was going with this, so my first coat of paint was an olive green chalk paint. I knew I wanted a dark color for the base to show beneath the crackle paint I wanted to apply.

I spread a medium thick coat of white crackle paint over the stand and allowed it to dry naturally for best crackling results.

Next, I began adding ColourArte Silks in Peridot, mixing a little Sky Blue into the still wet paint.  I felt this color was not going to work well with my chosen papers, so I tried adding Emperor's Gold Silks.  

I still was not happy, so I added Chestnut Roan chalk ink from a re-inker bottle and applying the color with a piece of cut n' dry foam.  

I was beginning to like it, but it needed some red tones, so I added Transparent Red Oxide with a damp baby wipe.  In the photo above, you can see where I started adding the red on the base, and I completed adding the red in the photo below.

I decided to make the wood look aged, like it had been sitting in a barn somewhere for quite awhile.  So, I added Carbon Black antiquing cream with a damp baby wipe.  

Let the antiquing cream dry, then using a damp baby wipe, remove as little or as much of the antiquing cream as you like.  Allow the piece to dry, then apply a coat of gloss varnish over the piece to protect it.

You may be wondering why I used so many layers of colors when my final layer looks like aged wood.  Well, that is the funny thing about mixed media.  It is all about layers, and to be honest, even though I was not sure about where I was going, those layers are showing through and adding to the aged look.    

Now it is time to decorate the pages.  I added dry adhesive to each of my chipboard pages and covered them accordingly.  Below, you can see that I have laid the first piece down onto the back of the January paper, then I used a craft knife to cut around it and re-punch the holes.  (Note:  Be careful as you work.  The opposite side of my January page will be covered with the July page, February will be covered with August, and so on, so that it will be easy to flip the set of pages at the middle of the year.)

Now it is time to decorate each page with images that were fussy cut from the paper collection, and then embellished with appropriate chipboard from Gypsy Soul.
