The Little Mystic's Hutch

Although I've always been interested in the magical, I've never been one for crystals. Lately however I've been admiring a number of Instagram accounts that share these gorgeous pictures of crystal grids. Shiny stones laid out in pretty patterns. They're enchantingly beautiful.

Those patterns, colours, and crystals got me thinking about glitter and stardust and dreams and the Universe. Yes, all those things at once!

So I put together the 3 Panel Hutch, added some spindly legs and stars...

... and filled it with tiny gem stones.

Perhaps I'll make a life sized mystic hutch for myself in the future, but for now my fairies will not be wanting. They have drawers filled with stars, and loads of stones and gems, to weave some magic.

If you'd like to see the process of making this hutch, you can pop over to my YouTube channel to watch the video HERE.

Here are all the bits and bobs I used to create The Little Mystic's Hutch:

She's Got a Ticket to Ride by Betsy Skagen

What does your creative process look like? For me, some vintage Silver Star tickets sitting on my desk reminded me of the old Beatles song. That inspired me to search through my stash to find the perfect saucy woman.

A lingerie model from a 1940s magazine and several elements from Gypsy Soul, including a silver star,  set me on the path to create this mixed media / altered art wagon.

Tutorial: How to Create a Retro Mixed Media Wagon.

Begin by covering a shallow box with black gesso.
On cold press watercolor paper prepare a multi-layered mixed media background using acrylic paints, dry brushes, stencils, inks and other mixed media tools.
Use an embossing ink pen and a stencil to create the rocket cone. Add Deep Sea Baked Texture and activate with heat gun.
Cut your newly created mixed media paper to fit the inside of your box. Score where it will fold and make corner slices so you can create the box shape. Below I am showing the messy back side ( I am never a tidy crafter!) of the mixed media water color paper so you can see how I scored the paper and cut the corners.
After making sure your paper fits inside the box, Fold the paper into a rectangle, add glue and let dry.
Use paint or a marker to color the edge of your paper so that you won't have a glaring white edge.
Depending on the size of your box, you may want to trim the wheel axels so that they don't overwhelm your project.
Then cover all of the chipboard pieces--Ticket StripsStars String AlongsWheels, stars from the Celestial Shape Sets and a rectangle from the Four Panel Door with black gesso. When dry, paint the stars with metallic silver paint.

Select a paper straw that will fit through the axel and wheel holes and four washers that also fit. Paint the straw with black gesso. When dry cut the straw to fit the axel base.
Attach black Tyvek to the axels so you can strengthen the bond between the alexs and the box. I just love black Tyvek. You can use it for so many purposes such as creating incredibly strong folding hinges on books and journals. I used to color white Tyvek envelopes with a black marker until I found that I could purchase a black version of it.
Ink the Star String Along with embossing ink, cover with silver embossing powder and use a heat gun to activate it.

Punch a hole in the top of your mixed media paper box and thread the star through it. Cement the star in place with strong adhesive tape.
Adhere your mixed media paper box inside the cardboard box.

Using a strong glue like Beacon Fabrfi-Tac, adhere the axels to the bottom of the box. Slide the straw pieces through the axel, add the wheels and glue the stars from the Celestial Shape sets onto the straws. Add the chipboard rectangle to the front of the box to create a handle or carriage coupling.
Fussy cut a vintage lingerie model, adhere to black cardstock and cut around the image. Use a metallic silver paint pen to paint her shoes silver.

Tear one end of the tickets and the chipboard ticket strip. Distress the edges of vintage tickets with black ink. Adhere the tickets to the chipboard strip, then adhere the woman to the ticket strip.
Next add foam adhesive squares to the back of the woman and tickets to add depth to the project. Because I didn't have any thicker adhesive foam on hand ( and was too lazy to go to the store), I stacked three adhesive squares together to give extra dimension. Line up the tickets with the embossed arrows to create a rocket. Adhere the woman and tickets to the inside back of your box.
Use a printer or typewriter to create your title piece. Cut into a rectangle, ink the edges with black ink and adhere to a black cardstock background.

Cut a rectangle of clear acetate, score in half and adhere to the back of your title piece to make an invisible stand. Adhere inside the carriage box.
Apply metallic silver paint to a foam blending tool and stencil assorted graphics to the side and back of your carriage.
Add black Dresden trim.
Your Ticket to Ride Carriage is now complete! I hope you were able to find a little inspiration or knowledge from this tutorial. Have a great weekend! -Betsy

Night Angel Triptych

This month I've created a set of three mixed media angels. A dreamy mystical triptych.

With New Year looming I thought it was a perfect time to think of dreaming and making wishes. That's what this set is all about. Looking up and forward and making bedtime wishes listened to by Night Angels.

Each of the three elements is made using a Cross Top Triptych piece. One of the thing I really appreciate about these elements is that the front piece is made up of straight edges, making it easy to embellish with scrapbook paper.

Each of the three seperate pieces is a slightly different size, but all fit nicely on Gypsy Soul ATC Stands. This makes displaying your pieces soooo simple. AND those little stands come in a set of three  so they're perfectly matched. (AND they're pretty dang reasonable too!)

While putting these pieces together is so simple, I have a little walkthrough of the process of making them. Hop over HERE for the video.

Below are all the bits I used to create my pieces, but you should absolutely feel free to add your own special touch to create your own dreamy night angels.

Postcards from the road--Never pack light by Betsy Skagen

I just don't "get" people who manage to pack light. Even when I travel to the family lakeside cottage less than two hours from home, I manage to fill an entire minivan with vital stuff I simply cannot live without.

This particular postcard, which I made as part of the "Postcards from the Road" set I created for the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts/Canvas Corp Match Up, drives home this point.
To make the postcard, begin with the American Vintage Collection Wish You Were Here paper and cut out the Mountains postcard.
Cover stars from the Celestial Shape Set with black gesso and dry with heat gun. ( Talk about versatile--I have used Celestial Shape Sets so many times for so many completely different projects!) Alternate layers of Quinacridone gold acrylic paint and a gold paint pen until you reach desired effect.
Add ephemera from the Architextures 8x8 Paper Pack  and a piece of the Canvas Corp Burlap Sheet and adhere to the back of the postcard.

When dry, trim the excess.
Add water to acrylic paint to create washes and paint areas of your postcard, drying between applications to prevent muddy colors. When dry, use stencils and ink to add apply more color. Freehand paint on white starbursts. Some of the paint will seep through to the other side. Don't worry about this as it will just add dimension.
Apply a quote and image or two from the Architextures Parchment Rub-On Build It. Adhere the stars.

Print and cut out the Questionable Characters. Add three dimensional foam adhesive to the back and adhere to the postcard. Print out a sentiment, ink with brown ink and adhere to the postcard as well.
You might think I was facetious about not being able to pack light. To offer proof, I am sharing this photo from a weekend getaway to our cottage earlier this year. To be fair, it included supplies for the first trip of the year and we were bringing four people and two large dogs.

Star Cards by Heidi

Hello, Heidi here and I get to share a couple of cards I made using the Heidi's stars in Gina's store. What better time to get to use them than the 4th of July!

This first card is a pocket card, the front piece is raised so you could put a little gift card in it or a little hershey bar.  I tucked a little freedom card and a pinwheel adorned with one of the stars/gems.  Please take note of the little embossing there in the middle, doesn't it look nice?  I never do anything like this and the card just needed a little something so I pulled out my paper crimper .  The little pinwheel is a 2x2 piece of double sided paper, cut into the middle from each corner and then bend every other one into the middle and adhere.  Easy!
The second card is made with 3 different chipboard stars from the set that you will receive.  I painted each of them with crackle paint. Here is a little closer picture of the 3 stars:
I do hope that you are inspired by these cards, it was alot of fun to make them.  I think that you will find the stars to be quite versatile for holidays, birthday and very masculine as well!

Star Mini Album by Lisa

Hey All! Happy July 1st to you! It's Lisa Novogrodski here and today I have one of Gina's "Star Mini Albums" to share with you.

Grab yourself a beverage and relax. There are a lot of sweet fun pages to view on this one. (you might want a munchie too)
For the cover I used a coat of gesso as my base. Then I hit it with the heat tool (not really hit it but you know what I mean) and then applied some Magical Micas. I let it dry for a bit and while still tacky but not wet I brushed crackle over it. The crackle smeared the coloring a bit and allowed it to shade and some of the gesso to peek through.
To the little stars I added Lindys Mists and Shimmerz sprays.
I've also added some of Gina's Glassine bags to the pages of this album. I scored them in order to fold them then adhered. This leaves a little pocket to tuck things in and places to adhere photos or other small treasures.
Here is a little vintage 4th of July image I found. Sweet isn't it?

I thought it would be fun to create a little fold out page. I used a die cut from Bo Bunny, cut it in half and attached with a paper hinge.
I like to use die cuts as photo mats.

More glassine bags with little tags tucked in.
Fun star banner and beaded pin.
Whew! Thats a wrap! Thanks for sticking with me and be sure to check out Gina's Designs Store!
