Vintage Advertisements - ATC Bookcase

Today I have a quick and easy tutorial for you using minimal supplies to make this cool little bookcase for your ATCs or in this case, my little mini books!

 Here's how it came together: A few weeks ago I painted a few different elements with white gesso, including this bookcase in preparation for upcoming projects. So this time I am working on the bookcase.

I knew I wanted to cover it in collage paper so this time I decided to use one of my own designs, so I printed off a few sheets using a lightweight paper in my printer.  These are made using vintage ads from many places including ads for bookbinders, schools for boys, and other educational type advertisements.  So I started by tearing up some of the sheets, choosing the images I wanted for each side.

Then using collage medium (or matte medium), I started applying the paper to the bookcase base.

 This is a relatively quick process but you have to take care not to trap any air bubbles underneath! I covered all of the outside and inside of the bookcase but only the front panel on the drawer. I wanted the rest of the drawer to remain white.

 I decided to change the colour slightly and make it more vintage looking by wiping Burnt Sienna Fluid Acrylic paint diluted with a little water on it. These fluid acrylics dry very fast but you can help it along with a hairdryer if you don't like waiting.

I found this little wooden knob in my stash, complete with screw, so I just attached it to the drawer using the predrilled hole in the front of the drawer.

Once everything was dry, I painted all the edges using Black fluid acrylic paint.

   To protect your bookcase, add a couple of coats of varnish, gloss or matte, your choice. Then you can fill it up with all your favourite ATCs or little books.  If you are interested in making little books like those shown, you can find a tutorial here.

Thankful for Family Mini pocket book

I am really excited to share with you all today a fun little book that you can really do alot with.  It's a mini book with tags and for mine i am making this to send with a little tag card inside with a message and also a tag to attach a gift card for them.  I chose lots of pretty fall papers and tags to decorate my book and also this gorgeous Arched window that i shaded with chalk inks.

Inside the book there are flaps on both bottom edges and I added cute papers to each and that is where the tags slip in.  For the ivory tag I made it like a little card so that I can write a message inside.

And just for a fun idea you can pop up the window to make it stand out more with 3D foam dots.  I added some under my flowers and also added a bit of ivory twine.  I think she is really going to like it

And this shows the tags inside the mini book.  They are a little tall so I cut them down first before I added the papers on them.  It makes it more of a surprise to have all those cute things inside and not be seen .... you could even add a couple of cute photos too.

This was a fun project you could do in an afternoon and there is also a smaller ATC size that is 

perfect for gift cards.  I will have to make that up to share too !!

Summer Adventure Journals

Hi and thank you for dropping by to visit us today.... I am sharing two new travel journals that I made for my trips this summer.  I used papers and stickers by Echo Park and some of my favorite chippies from the GSLC store to go with it for the inside and front.  There are lots of them with a travel theme like this Discover word and the compass.  Inside I used the camera reels and it came out really cute!

Here is a closeup of the chippies.  I love all the wonderful details in these. They really stand out with the colors in the papers that I chose so I love that.

This journal contains lots of pages and pockets for pictures so on each of the pages I decorated them like this with fun tags and bits of chipboard to carry the theme throughout the book.

And since you get a couple of chippies in the same package I made a book for my sister for her adventures this summer too.  For this one I used a simple paper notebook just to journal so it went together really quick and it was super fun to make.  You can even have  arrows from the GSLC Arrow Shape Set.  There are lots of them to chose from in this set and you can chalk them, or paint them or do anything fun to make them match all the other sweet things you have on your projects.

For this book I used the "Adventure ahead" chipboard sentiment.  I love this one and I like to keep them natural for some things so just add a bit of chalk ink and glue it down... fast and easy!

A Special Wedding Book to share

Happy Sunday all you chipboard fans of GSLC.  Today I have a really fun project to make to keep all those pictures you have of your favorite wedding that you went to recently or a new wedding coming up for summer.  I used the "Art Journal" chipboard mini book to make the base of my project because it has so many pages in it that I can fill for pictures and other fun little chippies to add to it.  You have tabbed dividers and with a front and back and also single pages between each with corrugated paper and flat chipboard to fill with lots of pictures and other goodies from your stash.  I love that!

On the front cover of my book is one of the really pretty laser cuts design patterns that we have that you can cut apart, use to stencil or just use as a pretty decoration like I did.  This one is called " Posey Panel ".   Since there was so much talk about the wedding in England I was inspired to use lots of gilded embossing powders and inks to make this very fancy and elegant and a real treasure for my daughter to use.  The wedding papers and stickers are from Photo Play and it all went together really easy and was super fun to make.  Below are more pictures of the insides for you....

For the inside I used the stickers and tags and lots of black and white papers to make the pages.  The gorgeous chipboard frames in the store are perfect to add the detail I wanted around the words.

Here is another of the frames.  This one reminds me of old victorian gingerbread on the outside of a house.  It's so pretty and so ornate.  The pictures are going to look so nice inside.  There is a huge selection of these frames in the store that you can see on this link HERE <<<<  And you don't have to make your books super fancy... the pictures and fun memories will do all the work.

Christmas Mini Book Albums

It's almost time for Christmas and time is getting a little short these days so I thought I would share with all of you a special Christmas photo/memory box filled with tiny mini books that you can make to put all of this years Christmas memories in.  It doesn't have to be done before the holidays, so that's good,  but just knowing that you can fill it with extra special pictures and journaling gives you something fun to plan for and do after the holidays.

This adorable little mini book shelf and drawer set comes complete with instructions and all the pieces that you need to complete it.  I did mine in one afternoon and kept it pretty simple but these would be so much fun to do for other holidays and babies too.  And you can always add lots more to decorate the outside and insides of the books to make it yours.   Join me for a quick tutorial...

1. First wipe all the edges of the chipboard pieces clean and glue together the box and drawer and let them dry completely. Set aside those mini book pieces for later.

2. Measure each of the sides and cut papers to fit and glue with adhesive.  I like Scotch quick dry because the paper doesn't ripple and it's super quick to work with.  I also cut pieces for the insides even though the mini books will be in them.

3. This Photo Play winter paper line also comes with lots of mini cards so I cut them all apart while I was waiting for everything to dry.  I am going to use them for inside my books later.

4. Cut the pieces of paper for each of the mini books as directed in your instructions and lay out the cardboard pieces that you get in the set.  Glue them on top and let them dry. Be sure and leave a small space between the pieces like I did so it folds really easily.   I like to put on a book or something on them while they dry to keep them flat.

5.  Now you can cut off all of the corners and fold the paper over to make sure the miters are even.  Then glue them down with a good double sided tape.  Not waiting for glue to dry is a good thing.

6. I wanted to give you another idea for the inside besides what the instructions give you so I cut fancy matted pieces of printed paper for each of the sides and glued them down first and then created that little white book to fit in the center.  I cut three strips of paper for each book- 3 1/4 inches wide by 11".  For the first one I scored it on 4" then 4 1/4 and then 4 1/2.  Then measure to 8 1/2 and cut the end off.  The second you will do the same way but leave 1/2 inch in the center.  And the last you will have 3/4 inch in the center.  This way each of the books can lay inside of each other and be glued in the center of your mini book like you see above.  Your center piece is 1" wide so you may have to cut a piece of patterned paper to go under it to cover the cardboard.

7.  Now you can have fun with stickers and tags and decorate each of the books for whatever you did fun for the holidays.  Parties, lights, dinners, friends... all those neat festive things that your family does.  Sounds like a fun project right?

And I have a friend that I worked with named Holly so when I found this sentiment and I thought this would make the perfect gift to give for her.  Their family does lots of fun things and it's nice to have it somewhere to share with everyone for years ahead.

Home for the Holidays Hidden Drawer Book Box

  

Hi and welcome to my Sunday share on the Gypsy Soul Laser Cut blog today!!  I hope you had a really nice weekend because I have a really fun project to make up for the holidays you will love.

In the GSLC Chipboard shop we have this adorable Hidden Drawer Book box -large that I am going to have to say is one of my favorite projects I have done so far.  I made this book up with papers from the  Simple Stories "Very Merry Christmas collection" and I love how it came out.

Inside the book that you create and paint you have a hidden drawer that you can fill with life's little treasures from holidays and events or even make little mini books to fill with pictures and journaling to remember a very special Christmas like I did.  Above is how the drawer slides out.  How clever is that!

And you can dress it up with lots of little goodies from the store like this snowflake border from the Winter Shape set.  It has skads of amazing little chippies in the set that you can paint or emboss so that made it even more fun to use.

Here are a few of the mini books that I made for the inside of my drawer.  I made about 6 minis total and each of them is accordian style so I have lots of room for my favorite pictures.

And here is the second set of mini books.  You can even use the chipboard frames on the covers of the books to add a little bit of country charm to them.

Below is a quick little tutorial for you on how to put this cutie together so grab a cup of coffee and join me won't you :)

First take all the pieces out of the set and put a quick drying glue on all the corners and put them together as shown above.  You have one extra long flat piece and that is for the edge of the book but glue the other pieces first and let them dry good before you glue the end piece on.

Once the drawer and the book are dry you can set the book on it's side and glue on the drawer.  Be sure that you have it evenly spaced so that when it slides in it will have a seamless edge.

For my book I wanted to seal the chipboard so I used a gorgeous deep red acrylic paint from Americana that matched my papers and painted all the edges front and back, inside and out and let it all dry.

Then I measured the inside space of my drawer and created little fold out books that would tuck nicely inside of it.  I did them in kraft and ivory to go with the papers.

And then I just had fun and used all the cute stickers and cards in the set and decorated them like you see above.  It was really fun and I can see lots more in my future for maybe babies or other fun holidays or events that I need to store my special little photos and trinkets!

New Fall Mini Book to share today

I love Fall and have been super busy this year picking apples and pumpkins and doing all those fun things you get to do at this time of year.  So-- I thought I better get to work on a new mini book to put all my fun pictures that I have into.  I chose some fun papers from Echo park and lots of chippies.

Creating this book was really fun because there are so many pieces that Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts creates to use for it.  There are pumpkins, chicken wire, corners, lots of vintage stuff and so much more.  On the cover I used the Wrought iron shape set corners and inked them just a little bit to go with the country feel of my kraft covered book I got from Michaels.

And on the inside I kept it really easy by just layering all the printed papers and then adding chipboard pieces like this one from the Chevron words set.  It has 4 super cute pieces and they fit perfectly on each of the pages I did.

I just loved all the stickers in this Echo Park paper set called Perfect Autumn.  The colors are so pretty and remind me of all those pretty colors when the leaves change for fall.

And these little beauties are from the  Feathers shape set and come in a nice assortment of sizes and worked really cute with my stickers.  Who doesn't love pretty feathers and inking them or embossing them is easy.

And then I found this cute chicken wire in my stash and thought how fun to use it to frame up a few pictures on.  I love that the chipboard adds a little dimension to an otherwise flat page and you could also use it to stencil on your book it you wanted to. I still have to get the pictures all printed but I think all of them will fit quite nicely in my new fall book.

And lastly here is another one of those cute Chevron words.  Perfect pretty much says it all.
