Mini Movie Prop Display Case

Happy Saturday, everyone! I have a silly project to share today. I love using the GSL Bookcase 1 to 12 to display things and have been on a bit of a Holy Grail quest lately with some of my projects. I got to thinking about how fun some of the props they used in the movie are and wanted to make a few in miniature and this little display came to life.

The bookcase is very simple to assemble with tacky glue. I used rubber bands to hold everything in place while the glue dried.

A few coats of brown acrylic paint came next. So quick to finish and now it needs some props.

I started with shields, which are made from GSL House Jewelry Piece bases which were painted white. Sir Galahad's shield got one of the GSL Gothic Cross Miniatures painted red and King Arthur's sun symbol was hand drawn. 

I made a few research books for the shelves from GSL Miniature Book Blanks (coming soon). These make the perfect sized book for a miniature project and are so simple to use. I painted the edges white to represent book pages. 

The only thing needed to finish it off is a printed cover.

I also included a reference book on sparrows. The holy hand grenade is a large pearl bead studded with crystals and topped with toothpick ends painted gold.

This shelf includes polymer clay coconut shells coated in jute threads for Patsy to use to make horse hoof sounds for Arthur's imaginary horse. I also included a can of Spam made from a dollhouse brick and a miniature shrubbery.

The shields are on the second shelf, along with a resin bunny representing the rabbit of Caerbannog, a polymer clay witch nose and a dagger from a Clue game.

The bottom shelf contains prop barnyard animals for the french to catapult over the castle wall.

The final touch is a sign made from a GSL Stackable Label. This was a fun project that opens up many possibilities for many more movie prop displays!

Retro Teen Girl's Bedroom Nook

How's that for a post title? Happy Saturday, everyone! This little project brought back some fond memories and I had way too much fun with it. Record players, black light posters, bean bag chair....let me walk you through how it came together.

The scene was set inside a GSL 7 by 7 Corner Room Box. Here are the pieces laid out ready to assemble with tacky glue. It's the perfect size to set a miniature scene.

Once the glue dried, I papered the floor with a white hardwood floor paper from BoBunny's Garden Party collection and the walls with Paper Studio's Girl Flowers.

A GSL Bookcase 1 to 12 displays a lot of treasures. Pink and gingham were all the rage for girls rooms during this era. Authentique Latest & Greatest has the perfect gingham to paper the back wall of the bookcase once it was assembled. 

Rubber bands were used to hold the bookcase in place while the glue dried. 

It was painted off white to reflect the French provincial style so popular during this timeframe.

The other piece of furniture in the room is a record player console made from a GSL Library Table. My dad actually made me one of these when I was a kid to hold my stereo. Today it holds my crafting books.  Here are the pieces laid out.

I painted the sections before assembly. This makes it easier to get paint into the small nooks. It was papered the same as the bookcase.

The room needs a record player! So easily made from a GSL Suitcase 1.6 Inch and cardstock circles.

It was finished with some beads for the knobs and a snip of wire for the arm. I also made a little jewelry box from a GSL Mini Cigar Box available over at Alpha Stamps.

Here's the record player in place beneath a few posters from the time period. This little nook has black light, Have a Nice Day, Hang in There and Peter Max posters. The console also has a ouija board, Mickey Mouse ears, Creepy Crawler molds, a Mad magazine, a jar of mercury (What, didn't everyone play with mercury from broken thermometers as a kid?) and some albums which are just printed images glued onto thin cardboard.

Some favorite games assembled from printed minis. 

The shag rug is a section of pastel rainbow trim I found in the fabric section at Hobby Lobby. I'm always on the lookout for bits I can use in miniatures. I sewed up a quick beanbag chair and plopped a stuffed animal in it. The miniature chemistry book next to the chair was covered in a bit of brown paper then doodled on. There's a periodic chart to study from, too. 

Besides a few collectibles, the bookshelf has a Pet Rock (pebble with googly eyes), Magic 8 Ball (black bead), Rubik's Cube and Green Ghost game (mini printables), black & white TV made from a small tin, and a Silly Putty egg (poly clay). The glass jar contains some water beads. I wanted to make a lava lamp but finally settled on this. I also really wanted a Troll Doll for this room and ordered a miniature one from China but my order got cancelled. I'll keep an eye out for one!

The Great British Bake Off in Miniature

Happy Saturday, everyone! One of my favorite TV shows to have on while I'm crafting is the Great British Bake-Off.  Each week the amateur contestants compete in signature, technical and showstopper challenges. Throughout each season they bake bread, cakes, pastries and biscuits hoping to receive the coveted glass cake stand trophy and be named Britain's best baker. The show is taped in a lovely tent on an English country estate and is outfitted with colorful contestant work stations, one of which I have recreated in miniature.

I started with a GSL Bookcase 1 to 12, easily assembled with tacky glue. 

 

The back of the bookcase serves as the front of the work station. Since the originals have a decorative wood detail, I recreated that using coffee stir sticks. 

I really like how this detail came out!

I chose a soft green paint for the piece and added two pieces of balsa wood painted black and cut to fit the openings. These are going to be the work station's ovens. Since they are decorative only, I topped them with a tongue depressor cut to fit. These serve as shelves on top of the ovens.

For the top of the work station, I used a length of balsa wood. Because it was about ¼ inch too short, I pieced it with another small slice of balsa. Each station has a glass cook top. I recreated this by painting a square of scrap chipboard black.

 

Here it is all assembled. I cut up a copper plated cocktail pick to use as oven handles.

Now on to the bakes!  I used a GSL Tiny Tray with Handles to hold one of them. It's available over at Alpha Stamps.

I painted the tray in an off white and made some molded paper clay bread loaves that were painted then 'toasted' with a light coating of pastel chalk. Those were nestled on a tiny square of gingham.

My next project was to make small layered lemon traybake slices out of polymer clay. Those were frosted with white paint then dipped into micro fine glitter 'sugar' and topped with a poly clay lemon slice. They were then displayed on a metal filigree jewelry connector. 

For the piece's showstopper, I was inspired to recreate Nadiya's marzipan covered peacock cake from season 6 in polymer clay.

Happy Saturday, everyone! Connie here with a project near and dear to my heart. My husband and I just returned from a fabulous cruise vacation that spanned 26 countries. I picked up tiny bits and bobs along the way and knew exactly how I would showcase them... in a GSL Bookcase 1 to 12.

The bookcase came together super fast. Here are the pieces laid out just prior to assembly.

I painted it with black acrylic paint and decided on a nice neutral gray paper from Tim Holtz for the back wall. I painted around where the paper would be adhered so the seams wouldn't show. 

The paper was glued in place then the entire piece was assembled using tacky glue and set aside to dry.

I added our cruise map to the top shelf along with a commemorative pin we received during our travels.  On the second shelf I adhered a piece of the business card from the cooking school we attended in Thailand. Next was a miniature aboriginal-style painting I made and finally the entrance pass we received while visiting the Borobudur temple in Indonesia. 

The only thing left to do was glue in place our treasures, which included brass miniatures from Sri Lanka, a tiny pitcher I picked up in Malaysia, some coral and shells from the South Pacific and a miniature rhino.

More brass, a guinea hen feather from Kenya, a tiny natural history book, a shark vertebrae from Fanning Island and a seed pod from Australia.

 This is a great way to keep some tiny memories at hand, instead of in a box somewhere.

VHS Cassette Tape Rental in Miniature

I was recently told that VHS rental is coming back to fashion. My first reaction was - I need to celebrate this in miniature! I've been eyeing the GSL Bookcase 1 to 12 and decided it was perfect. 

As with all of my projects, I start by laying out all the pieces to see how everything fits together. This one is super simple to figure out.

I decided to give the inside of my bookcase a neutral finish to make the shelf contents stand out so I gave the inside surfaces a coat of gesso as primer, followed by a coat of off-white acrylic paint.

Once dry, the bookcase was assembled using tacky glue. I used rubber bands to hold everything in place while the glue dries. Once dry, I gave the exterior a coat of gesso followed by a bright red acrylic paint finish.

The GSL Filmstrip Mini Sheets made the perfect décor for the sides of the case. I gave each one a coat of black acrylic paint.

Next came the fun part! Searching for images of some classic movie posters that I resized to perfectly fit inside the filmstrip openings.

Once assembled, they were glued onto the sides of the case.

To make the tapes, I started with dollhouse construction bricks I've had in my stash forever. If you aren't able to find them, you could also use scraps of wood cut to size. I painted the bricks black to mimic a tape cassette. Searching for images was fun. I was surprised how many VHS tape covers I was able to find. I adjusted the size for print, cut them out then used a scoring board to make the creases nice and crisp then glued them onto the bricks.

I knew I wanted to have some candy and popcorn on the top shelf because every VHS rental place I've ever been to sold to-go movie snacks. The popcorn box and Snickers display were free printable miniatures I found online. Same for the M&M's. To make a display case for the M&M's, I cut a tongue depressor and some coffee stirrers to size, painted them red then glued them together with tacky glue. The little Snickers and M&M's packages each got a small piece of coffee stirrer glued inside as a filler. 

Final touches include a Starship Enterprise that started life as a Hallmark mini ornament, a ceramic popcorn bucket from my stash of miniatures and a Be Kind Rewind sign made from cardstock glued to one of those dollhouse bricks to make it stand up.
