Love Potion No. 9 by Betsy Skagen

 

 Sometimes people need a little help in the romance department--that's why I invented Love Potion No. 9.

Each jar contains a potion of cherubic magic. Just open the mason jar, dab a little love potion behind your ears and let the romance begin!

Tutorial: How to Make Your Own Love Potion No. 9

Begin by painting gesso on Gypsy Soul's wonderful canning jar chipboard and on an old wood frame.

Apply embossing ink and distressed silver embossing powder to the canning jar lid. Activate with heat gun.

Create a "wash" by mixing teal paint with water and paint onto a deli sheet and onto the base of the mason jar.

Apply embossing ink over the teal part of the jar and sprinkle with clear embossing powder. Activate with heat gun. Repeat several times until you have a thick glass-like consistency.

Reheat the silver part of your jar and drag the end of a paperclip through it to create lines. After it cools, you can accentuate the lines with a black pen.

Use a metallic silver paint pen to change a Faux Metal Number Plates from gold to silver.  

Cover the label part of the jar with black ink.

Create a label with your computer, print and cut out. Attach the computer label to the black label. Insert two brads into the number plate and adhere to the black label. 

Coat the deli paper with gloss medium. Place the jar on the deli paper. Add a cherub image and heart to the inside and cover with another coat of gloss medium.

Cut away the excess deli paper. Glue onto black cardstock and cut the black cardstock around the jar. 

Cut a piece of sheet music to fit the frame. Dry brush black and teal paint around the edges. Draw hearts with a light blue market. Scribble loose hearts with a silver marker inside the blue hearts. Use rub-ons to place a 9 inside each heart. 

Add black medallions to the corners.

Adhere the jar to the sheet music.

Use a silver paint pen to paint your frame silver. After it dries, dry brush black paint over the frame. Glue the frame to the sheet music.

Canning Jar Valentine's Day Card

Hello there friends and Crafty Peeps! Whose in the mood for some Valentine's Day inspiration. This girl!

This card is super sweet. I really love the Canning Jar chippie. You can use it for so many things! For this card I used it to create a bit of a faux shaker.

It's layered over a frame to build up the dimension.

And topped with even more layered chippies. So. Much. Layers.

And of course I can not create a card without flowers so I added these and the coordinate perfectly. Sweet and simple.

I selected the chipboard and wiped it down to prepare it for altering.

Everything gets a base coat of flat white craft paint.

I've added a layer of acrylic to the back of the jar and snipped the Valentine chippie so the sentiment can be added over the heart.

The sentiment is finished with metallic silver and the frame has pink.

The inside of the "shaker" is patterned paper fussy cut to the shape of the jar and has holiday stickers added in a random overlapping pattern.
I doodled on the lines for the lid and tied a bit of twine around for a subtle accent.

Hi Everyone,

Jess here today with a little Halloween decor piece.

 

Here's how you can make your own. 

Cover the Miniature Clipboard with a vintage style paper.  Cover the entire piece of paper with a collage medium.  I like the finish it gives and how it takes the various inks and crayons.  Ink the edges and add some splats to look like coffee and possibly slime.  The slimy green is actually embossed so it's raised up a bit off the paper.  I did emboss the clip part of the clipboard, but decided not to use it in my final design. 

Emboss the edge of your Small Canning Jar.  I made a jar similar to this back in February.  If you'd like to check out the tutorial I have linked it here for you.  With this jar, I wanted it to look a bit grungy and murky.  Pounce mushroom alcohol ink onto the acetate and it will muddy up the "liquid" inside the jar.  A piece of cheesecloth stained with blood(kidding, it's alcohol ink) gets tied to the lid. 

Cut a piece of background paper to go behind your canning jar and add your images.  These guys were stamped and fussy cut.  Make sure you play with your placement before gluing anything down.  

You can see here at this point I was still playing with the idea of leaving it as a clipboard.  I also hadn't added the eyeballs.  It's always good to play with your composition before you glue!

 I decided that the jar on the clipboard wasn't enough and I wanted to beef up my project.  A small Tim Holtz framed panel was the answer.  Cover the panel with a piece of worn wallpaper and add Distress Oxides so the paper looks water damaged.   

On the frame, randomly paint on Distress Rock Candy Crackle Medium. Once it starts to crackle you can heat it up to speed up the drying process.  Paint the frame using Art Alchemy paint in Metallique Blackberry.  Once the metallic paint is dry use a thin layer of Distress Paint in Black Soot on the entire frame and wipe most of it away. You just want it to sink into the recesses.  In random areas add metallic waxes in opal colors.  This adds another layer of dimension, but doesn't add a ton of color.  The final step on the frame is to use a fine brush and Dina Wakley Gilt paint to go around the edges.  Perfection is not the goal here.  The frame is supposed to look funky and old.  

Glue the frame to the back. 

Add your clipboard to the frame and add a small quote to the top.

A little metal tag, sticker, and eyeball brad round out the finishing touches. 

I hope you enjoyed this little project.  It was fun to make! I can't wait to pull out all of Halloween decor now.

Sweet Little Wishes in a Jar by Betsy Skagen

At least once in a lifetime a person should receive a tiny jar full of sweet wishes. Every now and then we all need something magical to happen! You can be the one to create magic in someone else's life--and perhaps help a wish or two to come true, when you give them this card. 

Begin by coloring a tissue paper with light blue marker.

Dry brush white acrylic paint onto it. 

Next apply silver embossing powder with embossing ink to lid of Canning jar and heat set. Draw lines with a black marker.

Daub Blue Stream colored acrylic paint around jar edges and dry. Apply Fractured Ice embossing powder with embossing ink over top of blue paint and heat set.

Glue jar to tissue paper and cut away remaining tissue.

Fussy cut the baby from Paper Calliope's Precocious #1. Cut wings from teammate Nichola Battilana's Just Wings sheet and glue behind baby. Adhere both baby and wings inside jar.

Twist a brown wire  to add dimension and add it and a silver star to the baby's hand.

To finish your card, adhere a dictionary page to a greeting card base. Did you notice how I picked the page with definitions of  "fairy", "fairyland", "fairy ring" and "fairy thimbles"?  It's those little extra touches that help bring about the magic.

Rub brown ink around the edges of the dictionary page. Glue on the jar with baby.

Write "Wish" on a leftover scrap of blue tissue. Frame it with decorative scrapbook paper and adhere it to the card.

All that is left for you to do is send this sweet card to a special someone to brighten their day!
