My Dad Was a Romantic-A Peek-a-Boo Project

I’ve written about my complicate relationship with my father in previous post- Father's Day Journeyman-but as I have also stated before our parents lived lives before we knew them. In the same envelope of treasure troughs I wrote about in last month's Mother's Days post there were pictures of my dad in his WWII Army Uniform. When we were going through the contents of our family homestead we found a box of letters written to my mom from my dad when he was stationed in Germany. They give us insight to their young love and a side of my dad I never knew. These letters are the inspiration for this artwork.

1.  Gather supplies.
2.  The substrate for this duel artwork is   GSLC Display Dome back section.
3.  Make copies of collected treasure trough-photographs, maps, letter.
4.   Do a quick dry brush technique using yellow, green, and brown acrylic paints.
5.  Fill in any empty spaces with TH Bundled Sage Distress Stain.
6.  Use Weldbond to apply strips of maps and letters to your altered dome substrate.  Adding a few focal point photographs.
7.  Use sanding blocks to perfect and distress edges.
8.  Coat entire surface with Matte Gel Medium sealing it all in.
9.  Use embossing ink to add embossing powders to GSLC Typewriter Set-I used black metallic tones.
10.                Once again fill in any empty spaces with TH Bundled Sage Distress Stain.
11.                Cut a piece of copper foil paper to place behind the cut out typewriter keys.
12.                Sandwich and glue the GSLC Typewriter Sets together. Allow to dry fully being pressed down with a heavy book.
13.                Use embossing ink to add embossing powders to GSLC Vintage Bulb Set-I used yellow, red, German silver. Cure with heat tool.
14.                Use Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold acrylic paint to fill in empty spaces.
15.                Cut a piece of copper foil paper to place behind GSLC Vintage Bulbs
16.                Sandwich and glue the GSLC Vintage Bulbs together. Allow to dry fully being pressed down with a heavy
17.                Use embossing ink to add embossing powders to GSLC Eiffel Tower-I used yellow, brick, and bronze. Cure with heat tool.
18.                Use Raw Sienna and Yellow Oxide acrylic paint to fill in empty spaces.
19.                Decide on placement of these larger pieces on your prepared substrate.
20.                Next Choose items from GSLC Parisian Shape Set and GSLC-Heart of Gears to add additional layers and interest to artwork.
21.                Use embossing ink to add embossing powders to GSLC heart of Gears, Chairs, and Corset-I pinks and reds. For Fleur-De-Lis I used gold and coppers, For scroll work I used silvers and platinum, and on birds I used shades of blue. Cure with heat tool.
22.                Use acrylic paints to fill in empty spaces and to add interest, details and layers.
23.                Decide on placement for assemblage and add to artwork using Heavy Gel Matte Medium and a thin plastic spatula.
24.                Select postage stamps and paper ephemera from your collection and add to empty spaces in your assemblage using Heavy Gel Matte Medium and a thin plastic spatula.
25.                Always allow everything to dry completely as you keep it flat and weighted down.
26.                Wanted to add a vintage appeal and unify the piece I added blue and green texture pastes to the edges using a thin plastic spatula.
27.                Add green acrylic paint to a small portion of Cosmic Shimmer Lava Paste and dab it onto edges using a thin plastic spatula. Cure with heat tool.
28.                To further unify the artwork I added metallic gears using miniature screws, screwdriver and awl.

Some Final Thoughts.

My parents were married for 59 years, still together to my dad's passing. They had a relationship that showed their love and adoration for each other. It wasn't free from bickering-dad mowing mom's flowerbeds, dad driving too fast, or him picking at a bandage-but I never saw them fight in front of us kids. They taught me how to be dedicated to another in quiet times, to share the chores-Mom washed dishes dad dried them, mom canned the Bread and Butter Pickles dad ate them, dad went to work and mom picked up side jobs-picking tomatoes, trimming Christmas trees, selling her produce at farmers' markets, babysitting, selling Amway, vanilla extract, paring knives, wooden spatulas that doubled as a paddle, helping the neighbors butcher in exchange for meat for the table...and maybe more I did not know about. They were not "I love you!" type of people and I wondered why they rarely said to each other or me while growing up. I knew they loved me but I wanted to hear it spoken.

Now having the letters and the history of my parents courtship I know my dad was a romantic and I am inspired to live my life sharing my love and kindness with others.

Feminine Birthday Card

Hi everyone! Barbara here on the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts blog. I want to share a card today with a very feminine, and a bit shabby feel. I have birthdays coming up in the next few months, so cards to send are on my mind. Laser cut chipboard is a real pleasure to work with, and I love how they add so much dimension to a card without adding too much bulk.

I used a pink card base and print paper layer cut slightly smaller. I painted the Flourished Frame Connie with pink acrylic paint and distressed it with gelatos.

Next step, adhere the layers, as shown, including the print post card from the paper.

I painted all pieces with a coat of acrylic paint before adding color with gelatos to give added depth and dimension to the pieces. The perfume bottle was run through an embossing folder (just the bottle portion) and then I hit the high spots with a gold ink pad. I also added some gold to parts of the bird cage, as well.

Next step, adhere the bird cage with the postage stamp image over the opening.

Adhere the remaining pieces to the card front as shown.

Lastly, I added a few gem stickers to the fleur de lys, dressform, and perfume bottle top.

Facebook Challenge for May by Dianna

Hi everyone, Dianna here with a new project for Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts Craft Group Monthly Challenge. The first of each month there is a new challenge. This month's Challenge is an animal challenge, anything to do with animals.

All you have to do is become a member of the Craft Group on Facebook and submit your entry. The winning entry will receive a $10.00 gift certificate to Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts.

I chose Graphic 45's Raining Cats and Dogs to go with Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts new Dog Shape Set. I am really excited about this project because this mini album is being donated to JCCARE - Japanese Chin Care and Rescue On-line auction.

The cover of this mini album is made from a large pizza roll box and the pages were created to fit inside. The cover art is from Graphic 45's Raining Cats and Dogs and the corners are Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts Victorian Corners colored black with a marker.

The pages are 8-1/2 x 11 and are scored at 10-1/2 and 5-1/4; paper is turn 180 degrees and then scored at 5-1/4. Smaller tab is cut off and between the shallow squares then folded.

Both the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts Chipboard pieces are from the Parisian Shape Set and are colored black with a marker. A punch was used on the paper to create the side waterfall.

I used Twinkling H20's on the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts Dog Shape Set (coming soon) and cut the Graphic 45's Raining Cats and Dogs was cut out and glued to the inside of the collar.

Twinkling H20's was used on the dog house and bone. I cut out the little dog in the house and popped it up with a scrap chipboard piece.

I created small fold outs with scrap paper and put the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts - Good Dog on top. The frame was colored with chalk inks and only one side was glued down so that a picture could be inserted.

The fire hydrant is from Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts dog shape set and I used a red Twinkling H20's for color.

Steampunk Shadowbox by Dianna

Hi Everyone, Dianna here with Gypsy Soul Laser Cut's Small Shadowbox and Graphic 45's World's Fair. I decided to approach this project by using each square as its own ATC.

I painted the box by using a Deco Art Bronze Paint then used a wood Stain to create a faux wood look. The first box I fussy cut the stamp and little tickets from Graphic 45's World Fair. I used a stamp punch to create a larger stamp. Behind the fussy cut of the second box, are beads that match (I used Beacon's 3-n-1 to make them stick). The Steampunk Frame from Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts was "painted" using bronze, gold, black and teal chalk inks. The crow was painted white and colored with Copic Markers.

I really loved the Ferris Wheel, so everything was fussy cut and layered. I used chalk ink on Gypsy Soul Laser Cut's Fleur De Lis from the Parisian Shape Set.

I used black and bronze chalk ink on a Gypsy Soul Laser Cut's -Wrought Iron corner piece and Gear Shape Set. I layered the gears with scrap chipboard pieces and a clock charm. I fussy cut one of my favorite prints from Graphic 45's World's Fair and used Gypsy Soul Laser Cut's Border Stick behind it. The bronze and gold chalk ink was used on the Gypsy Soul Laser Cut's Word Charm - Journey.

The car and two tags were fussy cut out from Graphic 45's World's Fair and the car layered with Gear Shape Set.

The Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts Square Charm (coming soon) and Fleur De Lis was painted with bronze, gold and black chalk inks. The metal piece in the back ground was an extra and the metal bobbin was from a metal set that I had laying around. The Graphic 45's World's Fair Lady was cut out of a larger design and placed in the Square Charm.
