Falltime Faeries-A Peek-a-Boo-Project

Toadstool and Mushrooms have a litany of symbolic meaning, they are thought to be signs of faeries, gnomes, and other wee folk. They are associated with the moon and in the language of flowers mean suspicion. In literature, they are a symbol of immortality and eccentricity. In China they symbolize life, happiness and rebirth. These are the inspiration for this instillation.

1.  Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts have four of these Art Nouveau Frames, I chose 1, 2, and 4 for this artwork.

2.  I spent hours on Pinterest looking for Images of Magical Mushrooms, I settled on these three and place the extra into my “Assundries” Folder on my Pinterest Page.

3.  Adjust them to size so that the three of them can be the backdrop for the GSLC Art Nouveau Frames.

4.  Prepare Elongated Wooden Frame spraying with Seth Apter Izink Dye Sprays in Tea, Spring Green, and Honey, TH Distress Spray Stain Carved Pumpkin.

5.  While still wet sprinkle with Nutmeg and Chili Powder. Allow to dry fully.

6.  Once dry, seal entire frame with Matte Medium.

7.  Add patina and interest by dry brushing on Golden Green Gold Acrylic Paint.

8.  Once dry, cut and glue down three magical mushroom images.

9.  Press Images down using a piece of Deli Paper.

10.                Press into place with a weighted Ziploc bag, I fill mine with unused kitty litter.

11.                Prepare GSLC Art Nouveau Frames using Embossing Ink with a roller applicator.

12.                Sprinkle with Allure Ammo Camo and then Allure Weather Wood Embossing Powders, Curing Each time with a Heating Tool.

13.                To fill in any gaps I added TH Distress Stain of Bundled Sage.

14.                Then I did a quick dry brush technique using Golden Van Dye Brown Hue Acrylic Paint.

15.                Prepare GSLC Fairies using Embossing Ink with a roller applicator.

16.                Then sprinkle with Allure Mercury Rising Embossing Powders and Curing with a Heating Tool.

17.                Assemble your piece using Weldbond to adhere the GSLC Nouveau Frames and Fairies to the Magical Mushroom Prints.

18.                Hold into place with a weighted Ziploc bag as described above.

19.                Once fully dry, seal everything using a paintbrush and Matte Medium.

Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies have fascinated me since I first found them on Pinterest many years ago. They were first published in 1923. The drawings portray Botanically Accurate Flora and Fauna along with enchanting fairy images based on real children from Cicely’s sister’s nursery school. Do You Believe in Fairies?

Hello gypsy soulmates!  I've been playing with the fairies and captured a few on this cool 3D "film" from Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts.  Let me show you!

The Filmstrip Shadow Box is 14" x 4" x 2".  For scale, you can see a wee bit of my keyboard in the top of the photo.  See the excess chipboard bits in the top right corner?  Save those!  They're great to use for added dimension.

This has three interior panels but I'm only going to use the center one.  I measured strips of paper for the inside walls and both sides of the center panel, and attached with Mod Podge.

Here's the ceiling panel, cut in two pieces to allow the center interior panel to fit the notches.  White glue to stick it all together.

The Leafy Tree - Small comes with two trees - this is the smaller one.  I painted it and all 6 of the Garden Fairies - Small with white gesso.

I wrapped the outside with fun stripey paper.  I only have it in 8x8 format, so I used 2 sheets that line up perfectly; Mod Podge to adhere.

I used Lumiere metallic acrylic paints for the fairy silhouettes - Pearl White for the bodies and assorted colors for the wings.  I used a light green metallic paint on the tree and small excess chipboard bits on the back to raise it off the finished surface.

My first thought was to paint the filmstrip front with a very light salmon color, but ended up with an amethyst-brown mashup.

I cut the tree in half with a guillotine cutter and used white glue to adhere to the back of the box.

Caged Fairies

I continue my September lament, some days 'adulting' is a real drag, especially as a middle school teacher when you had off for summer vacation. This is the inspiration for this artwork, I've titled "Caged Fairies" as I feel like I cannot be my true self with all the expectations and requirements that are part of many jobs!! Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book was released many years ago when I first saw it I was very amused. It tickeled my sense of humor. Having a good sense of humor makes many "adulting" entrapment less daunting.

1.  Take the Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts Doodled Cage, Birdcages and one wing from GSLC Steampunk Set and Icicles from GSLC Winter Shape Set, and chosen fairy apart.

 

2.  Use Versa Mark to add layers of copper, antique gold, and Verde embossing powders to birdcages.

3.  Cure with heating tool.

4.  Once cages have dried, dry bush with black acrylic paint to "antique" them.

5.  Trace Birdcages onto Scrapbook Paper and fussy cut out background shapes.

 

6.  Use Weldbond to glue decorative paper to largest birdcage to give them a background save the medium and small backgrounds for later.

7.  Trace edges with purple marker.

8.  Use Versa mark to color fairy  and wings using Black, Blue, and Extreme Peacock embossing powders.

 

9.  Cure with heating tool.

10.                Use Versa Mark to color cut out heart from scrap, and icicles using red embossing powders.

11.                Cure with heating tool, and "antique" using a dry brush and black acrylic paint.

12.                Sandwich Fairy, Heart, and Wing inside of birdcages-trapping them using Weldbond on edges.

 

13.                Secure with clamps and allow to dry fully.

14.                Add Blood Icicles to birdcages, securing with Weldbond, using clamps to assure stability.

15.                Once everything is complexly dry use a small hole punch to punch small holes on top of birdcages and bottom corners of Doodled Cage.

16.                Use flat nose pliers to add smaller birdcages to bottom of larger birdcage using decorative chain.

17.                Your Caged Fairy Mobile is now ready to display!!

 

 

 

 

Some final thoughts. There are not many quotes about caged fairies but there are a few for caged birds. Maya Angelou, "The caged bird sings with a fearful trill, of things unknown, but longed for still, and his tune is heard on the distant hill, for the caged bird sings of freedom." Stephen King, "I have to remind myself that some birds are not meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright" I've learned many lessons along the way of becoming a grown up, and I believe that we have freedom to choose how we will respond to all that comes our way, and we are not trapped or caged in, there is always the hope of better days.
